Gear I Love: Metolius Rope Hook

The best $15 you'll ever spend.

The best $15 you'll ever spend.

You seen one of these things? It’s pure genius! It’s for keeping your rope well organized on multi pitch routes. It’s essentially a piece of curved plastic slipped inside tubular webbing. Simple.

You attach the Rope Hook to your anchor point at the top of a pitch and coil the rope back in forth in the hook. It’s a super easy way to maintain a clean belay. When the leader takes off on the next pitch, the rope is neat and can be fed out without any coils or knots.

I never really use the closure feature on it; I coil it for real if I’m walking off.

I’ve got two of these things and take them with me whenever I do a multipitch route. They’re about $15 each and they’re super light. Get em!

I used one of these for the first time the other day and it blew my mind. Simple and brilliant. When you’re belaying on a tiny ledge, you don’t have to worry about the rope falling or getting tangled or being in your way and getting stepped all over. A really useful tool.

that’s good to know, I would have thought these were total gimmicks, but now I’m curious and will have to check it out myself.

I got one after watching the rope snake its way down the cliff face while I was belaying the lead. Looking forward to trying it out. Thanks for all the great tips.
