How to make a trad draw

February 23, 2010

In yesterday’s tip I mentioned something about making trad draws out of 24″ slings. These slings are an essential part of any climber’s kit. They’re often carried over the shoulder, but sometimes these can be awkward to remove mid-climb. Enter the trad draw.

The trad draw is  a way to shorten these 24″ slings so that they can easily be carried on a harness. The photo below shows the process.

Now those cumbersome slings can be carried in an easier way. To extend the slings, remove the draw from your harness or gear sling like you would a normal quickdraw and with your fingers (mainly your thumb and pointer finger, with the others assisting) unclip two of the three loops of webbing that go through the top carabiner. This might take some practice, but it’s really easy once you know what to do. After you’ve unclipped these two, you might need to shake the sling a bit to get it to fully extend. And that’s it!
